As the global cannabis industry grows, so does the need for clarity and safety in labeling. Enter the International Intoxicating Cannabis Product Symbol (IICPS) — a globally recognized symbol developed by ASTM International, the world’s largest standardization organization.
This bright yellow triangular “yield” sign is more than just a design. It’s a universal marker created to alert both adults and children that a product contains intoxicating cannabinoids — compounds like THC that can alter consciousness.
Created by ASTM Committee D37 on Cannabis, and in collaboration with Doctors for Cannabis Regulation, (https://www.d4dpr.org/universal-cannabis-symbol) longtime allies of Fields of Green for ALL, the IICPS ensures that cannabis products are clearly and responsibly labeled across borders, especially in markets that do not yet have local warning symbols.
Why It Matters
- Clarity for Consumers: A study by HCD Research showed that people clearly associate the symbol with caution, potency, and intoxication.
- Adaptable Across Markets: While the symbol itself cannot be modified, governments and businesses can print details like “THC” or country codes next to it.
- Versatile Use: It applies to any product containing intoxicating cannabinoids — from oils and edibles to topicals and vapes.
Who Should Use It?
Regulators, manufacturers, and distributors in emerging or transitioning cannabis markets can adopt the IICPS to instantly meet international safety standards — especially where no local symbol exists yet.
