On 18 September 2018, the Constitutional Court of South Africa declared that the prohibition of Cannabis for use and cultivation within PRIVATE spaces was unconstitutional. The court ordered the legislature to amend the defective laws within 24 months.
In September 2020, the Cannabis for Private Purposes Bill was introduced in parliament under the auspices of the Department of Justice and Correctional Services.
Since our historic day in the highest court in the land, 6 years and counting, we have seen two official versions of the bill, numerous amendments, three sessions of public presentations and a few dodgy versions that caused confusion along the way.
