The Traditional, Cultural and Religious Use of Cannabis in Southern Africa and throughout our continent is entwined with our estimated 700 years of use in cultivation and trade (check History page). Our Traditional Knowledge Systems and Genetic Resources are very precious, in both historical and contemporary contexts. Traditions, Cultures and a wide range of beliefs create an interesting intersection between academic discourse, legal issues and what is actually happening on the ground.
We envision a world with sufficient funding to continue playing our part in enabling an inclusive, equitable, and sustainable Cannabis Sector to develop while individual, community, and cultural interactions with Cannabis are respected and protected.
Since 2013, Fields of Green for ALL has cultivated a wide network of experts and participated globally in dialogue around the way forward for our local communities. It is important that our local policies are not developed in a vacuum and we are inspired and encouraged by our Drug Policy colleagues from both developed and “developing” countries.
The importance of protecting biological diversity and the livelihoods of vulnerable populations, both rural and urban, informs Fields of Green for ALL’s work with both local and international laws and treaties. Locally, there is significant attention being paid to the plight of rural communities and religious groups but we are yet to see an end to the victimisation by law enforcement. Legal grey areas, regulatory uncertainty and corruption play a significant role in excluding most from our “sunrise” Cannabis sector.
While Fields of Green for ALL campaigns for the legalisation of Cannabis for ALL uses for ALL South Africans, it is important that we remember our history and there is an end to the marginalisation of communities who use this plant in ceremony and in accordance with their own, private beliefs and customs.
We engage with various communities to learn about their situation in an ongoing effort to include all South Africans in the conversation. Traditional Leaders and Healers, rural communities and Rastafari, we hear you!
An important annexure to our High Court evidence in The Trial of the Plant is an essay by South African historian and one of our expert witnesses, Craig Paterson. And to show how the current policies of prohibition are harming rural communities in South Africa, please watch our short movie: “Police in Helicopters” on The Dagga Couple YouTube Channel.
The new bits of paper flying about wildly this past month on the winds of change have us ALL paying close attention. Are these Cannabis Policy Reforms for good – or are they
