To all our valued supporters,
August 2013 was the 3 year anniversary of our campaign to re-legalise the use of the Dagga plant for ALL South Africans.
Three years ago the police raided our home in the middle of the night and sparked enough indignation in our hearts for us to declare our use of this plant publicly and call for you to join us on the long road to changing the law. It has been an interesting journey so far and we have met thousands of enthusiastic dagga users along the way. This has, however, come at a price. We are no longer able to fulfill our combined earning potential as the campaign takes up most of our time. Our fundraising efforts have been met with mixed success as the cost of hosting events rarely results in much being left over in the kitty.
Our inbox fills up on a daily basis with people wanting advice on everything from health issues to being in trouble with the law. We do our best to help where we can and answer all correspondence personally. Once the issue has been dealt with the people disappear into the ether and we carry on with the next set of queries. If we had R100 for every issue we have dealt with over the last 3 years we would be able to finance this campaign through the courts and beyond but that is a mere pipe dream.
Imagine if we said “Make a donation and then we’ll help you”!? We couldn’t possibly. It’s not in our natures.
Our supporters beg us to visit them in all parts of the country – we wish we could – but the reality is that petrol is over R13 a litre and if we charge more than R30pp at the door of our presentations people just don’t show up. We asked for donations to help us sponsor a runner in the Comrades Marathon. We raised a much needed R700, our share of the trip cost over R4000. The balance came out of our own pockets. This is not sustainable.
So perhaps there is something we are doing wrong here? We know that we are not good at asking for money, very few people are. We get many “You know what you should do” mails but none of them ever say “You should ask people for money more often.” Suggestions always entail more work and financial outlay for us as we endeavour to consider and implement each one.
We have studied the various ways in which organisations such as ours ask for money. A letter such as this one is not the norm as they are usually much more formal.
This is just a straight forward request for a once off donation, no matter how small you think it may be, or monthly debit order contribution. We have to keep the energy going as our legal battle gains momentum. We need to print flyers, stickers and posters, pay lawyers, pay for our ever increasing internet usage and financial administration of our audited accounts, save for securing the services of expert witnesses in the High Court, generate new material in the form of video presentations and short films, travel to spread the word in outlying areas and to people who do not have the luxury of the internet, save for the capital outlay needed to host events. The list goes on. It is an incredibly exciting time for the South African Dagga community. The conversation is out and about across the four corners of the country. We have to keep the ball rolling and are asking for your help.
Hey, we know it’s all our fault for having so many projects and so many ideas. We use the cannabis plant and you all know how many ideas come from using the plant. The thing is though, we aren’t the couch lock breed of stoner – we are on a mission to implement all of our ideas. We only have one chance at this – we have to do it right the first time by engaging everyone in all matters concerning this plant. It is the only way.
We know the South African economy is struggling, we are feeling the pinch like you. Fuel is R13/l for everyone. We also know you get bombarded for donations from all over your social media world too. So do we. Try your best. You wouldn’t believe what a thousand R50’s can do. 18,000 followers on Facebook. 5000 on an email list. 1500 on Twitter….. even if everyone just gave us R20 the boat would float for a few more months.
Thanks in advance, we’re all in this together! And thanks to those of you who have made donations over the last 36 months. A special thanks goes to all who regularly donate your time, effort and passion to the campaign. We have a small crew who make all this energy possible.
This time next year on our 4th anniversary we’ll be out of the High Court and on the next leg of our campaign, ,whatever and wherever that may be. Maybe we’ll already have a date for the Constitutional Court. We’re not going away, we are on a mission to finish what we started and we are giving this our best shot – always.
Please support the re-legalisation of Dagga for ALL South Africans, follow this link and choose either a once off donation or a monthly contribution.
